Each year, Games Done Quick hosts two seven-day speed running marathons to raise money for different charities. The marathons are called Awesome Games Done Quick and Summer Games Done Quick and they take place in the winter (AGDQ) and summer (SGDQ) of each year. With Summer Games Done Quick coming up, I thought I would share some of the world record runs from previous events.
Summer Games Done Quick 2015 is the next scheduled event and it will benefit Doctors Without Borders. SGDQ 2015 is being held in St. Paul, MN from July 26th to August 1st. You can check out the schedule page to find out what games are being played when or if you want to attend the event, you can learn more here.
Diddy Kong Racing – SGDQ 2013
Speedrunner Toufool31 broke his own any% world record by about a minute with a time of 50:49. At this point in the game's history the world record was being broken frequently. A few months earlier the record was over 2 hours, then it dropped to around 1:40, and finally, at the time of this video, it sat around the 50 minute mark.
Diddy Kong Racing is a kart racer on the Nintendo 64 that features characters from the Donkey Kong series of games. Diddy Kong Racing will not be played at Summer Games Done Quick 2015. Although, if you are a fan of Nintendo racers, be sure to watch Wave Race 64, Mario Kart 64, and F-Zero GX get played back to back at SGDQ 2015. That block is scheduled to start on Friday, July 31st at 12:05 AM EST.
Duke Nukem II – SGDQ 2014
The Duke Nukem II world record was broken by Bonesaw577 at Summer Games Done Quick 2014. Duke Nukem II is a DOS based side scrolling shooter that stars everyone's favorite protagonist, Duke Nukem. No Duke Nukem games will be ran at this year's SGDQ, but a few PC classics will take it's place. A six hour PC block starting on Friday, July 31st at 11:25 AM EST will include the original Fallout and Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
GoldenEye 007 – AGDQ 2014
Speedrunners AlexWAnderson andRWhiteGoose broke the two controller world record the 2014 Awesome Games Done Quick Marathon. The two controller speed run consists of two runners playing the game instead of the normal one. To put it in the simplest of terms, in this mode one person controls movement and the other controls the aiming and shooting. The runners absolutely crushed the record and would have done relatively well against most single player runners.
GoldenEye 007 is one of the most iconic games from the Nintendo 64 library. GoldenEye will not be played at SGDQ 2015, but you can check on Doom 64 at 2:55 AM EST on Friday, July 31st to get your N64 shooter fix.
Pilotwings 64 – SGDQ 2013
Graviton beat the previous record of 34:21 in his 33:31 run of Pilotwings 64 at Summer Games Done Quick 2013.
Pilotwings 64 is another Nintendo classic that was crushed by Games Done Quick. The game is, for the most part, an aviation simulator that includes several different game modes and vehicles. Summer Games Done Quick 2015 does not have Pilotwings on it's schedule, although they do have another Nintendo 64 classic being played on Saturday, August 1st. Super Mario 64 will be raced to 120 stars by three fantastic speedrunners as part of an amazing finale to the event.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 – SGDQ 2014
George came into the 2014 Summer Games Done Quick marathon as the best Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 speedrunner in the world. It was assumed that he would give the viewers a great run, but instead he destroyed the courses and earned himself a new world record with a run of 8:55.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 was released on nine different platforms between 2001 and 2003 and was the final game released for the Nintendo 64. The game is a skateboarding simulator and is widely considered the best of the Tony Hawk skateboarding games. If you are craving more Tony Hawk runs, you'll be able to check out moofin's run of the PC version of Tony Hawk's American Wasteland on Monday, July 27th at 8:50 AM EST.
Track and Field 2000 – AGDQ 2015
After 24 hours of various speedrunners attempting to beat the world record of 00:09.43 in the 100m dash, 0xwas was able to eek out the record by two hundredths of a second.
Track and Field 2000 is a mini-game based game that has players compete in several different events. The game has the pole vault, the high jump, and even the hammer throw, but the most prestigious of events to speed run is the 100 meter dash. The 100m dash is played by mashing the 'A' and 'B' buttons rapidly in succession to make the runner sprint to the finish line. Track and Field 2000 will not be run during SGDQ 2015 and from what we can tell, no similar game will ran either.
ZZT – SGDQ 2014
During the 2014 Summer Games Done Quick, Cosmo ran the extremely obscure, ZZT. His ZZT run had viewers, commentators, and attendees baffled through the entire length six minutes and forty-one seconds of the world record run.
ZZT is an ANSI character-based game, that doubles as a MS-DOS game creation system. The game was created in 1991 by Tim Sweeney of Potomac Computer Systems which later became Epic MegaGames in 1992. Unfortunately, ZZT will not be ran this year, but if you want some DOS based action you can check out a run of the first Fallout game on Friday, July 31st at 12:35 PM EST.
