Music and the Legend of Zelda have gone hand in hand since Link used the recorder to shrink the Demon Digdogger in the very first game.
The Legend of Zelda
Recorder or Whistle
The recorder, sometimes also known as the whistle, is the very first musical instrument that Link encounters in his many adventures. The recorder is used for three different reasons in The Legend of Zelda. First, it is used to shrink the 6th dungeon’s boss, Digdogger, to a size where Link can use his sword to fight it. It was also used to reveal the entrance of the 7th dungeon by playing it in front of a lake, draining it and revealing stairs. And finally, you can use it as a fairly unreliable way to warp around the map by randomly taking you between entrances to previously defeated dungeons.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, the flute is a clear carryover of the recorder from the first game but with what could possibly be a better translation.
