Heritage Auctions

Forget about your mint condition Black Lotus or your first appearance of Wolverine in a comic book, original unopened Nintendo games are the latest big ticket items to fetch tens of thousands of dollars at auction.

On Friday, July 1oth, a copy of the original Super Mario Bros. sold at auction for a record breaking $114,000.  The auction was by Heritage Auctions and was part of a virtual auction event that collected a total of $699,000 for classic Nintendo games.  Rolling Stone reports that among the games sold were the original Super Mario Bros. for $114,000, an original copy of Mike Tyson’s Punch Out for $50,000, and a copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 with special packaging for $38,000.

Heritage Auctions has another copy of the original Super Mario Bros. currently up for grabs on its website but it only is listed for $26,000 despite being rated slightly higher than the one that sold for $114,000.  This is mainly due to the sticker on the front cover and the fact that the $114,000 copy was known to be one of the first few copies to be sold because of its unique packaging.
